The Binse Dashboards user guide.
How to load data, lay out a page, write measures, and export a whole dashboard as one HTML file that opens on a machine with nothing installed.
This is the Dashboards guide that the installer puts on your machine, converted from the file the product ships. No sentence has been added, removed or reworded. Four things change in the typesetting and nothing else: emphasis is set in weight, because the four typefaces on this site carry no italic face; an em dash is set as a spaced en dash; a rightwards arrow is set as the two characters -> inside a command and as the word then in a sentence; and the visual catalogue is set as text, because the pictures in it are drawn by the application against your own data and are not published here.

Binse Dashboards builds interactive reports from your own files and databases, on your own machine. Load a spreadsheet or point it at a database, drag visuals onto a page, and everything you click filters everything else. When it is ready, export the whole thing as a single HTML file that opens in any browser with no server and no install.
Your data never leaves your machine unless you send the file yourself. The only thing the app sends out is its licence check: the licence key and a code for this computer, never your data. A dashboard over a 50 GB CSV works the same way as one over a 5,000-row spreadsheet - the difference is where the arithmetic happens, and the app tells you which it is doing.

Getting started
- Start the app with start.cmd. It opens in your browser at
http://127.0.0.1:8766. - On the Home screen, drop a CSV, Excel or Parquet file onto the upload area, or press Browse to pick one from a folder. The file is read, its column types are worked out, and it appears as a dataset card.
- Press New dashboard, choose the dataset, and you land on an empty page in Design mode.
- Drag a visual from the palette on the left, or press Add a KPI tile to start with one number.
- Click the visual and fill in its settings on the right: a field to group by, a measure to show.
- Press View to stop designing and start using it. Click a bar, a slice or a country and every other visual on the page follows.
- Press Export to write a single HTML file you can email to somebody who has none of this installed.
Save (Ctrl+S) writes the dashboard, and the Autosave switch beside it keeps writing it for you a couple of seconds after each change. Earlier versions under the dashboard properties keeps a copy of the version each save replaced, so nothing is ever lost to an experiment.
The screen
Home lists your dashboards and your datasets. Each dataset card shows its row count, where it came from, and buttons to view its rows, showcase every visual against it, or reload it.
Inside a dashboard:
- The toolbar, along the top: the dashboard name, View/Design, undo and redo, export, theme, full screen and help.
- The page tabs, under the toolbar. A dashboard can have as many pages as you like.
- The filter bar, under the tabs: one chip per filter, the cross-filter chip when something is clicked, and bookmarks.
- The palette, on the left in Design mode: every visual, grouped and searchable.
- The canvas, in the middle: a twelve-column grid. Drag a card by its title, resize from the corner.
- The properties panel, on the right: the selected visual's settings, or the page and dashboard settings when nothing is selected.

Loading data
Files. CSV, TSV, text, Excel (.xlsx, .xlsm) and Parquet. Drop one on Home, or press Browse. Types are worked out from the data: dates are recognised in the usual formats, numbers with thousands separators and currency symbols are read as numbers, and anything ambiguous stays text. You can correct any of it later from the dataset's Column types.
Watched files. A dataset loaded from a path is watched. Overwrite the file and the app notices, re-reads it, and the dashboard updates. A file still being written is left alone until it settles.
A folder of files as one table. Twelve monthly exports are usually one year of sales, not twelve datasets. In Browse, open the folder and press Combine folder into one table (or use the Combine action that appears on a folder as you hover over it).
You choose which files to include - the pattern starts at whatever extension most of the folder uses, and takes several separated by semicolons, such as *.csv;*.xlsx - and optionally add a column recording which file each row came from. Include subfolders and Every sheet of each workbook are there when you need them.
Two things this does that a strict load would not. Files whose columns differ are lined up rather than rejected, so a monthly export that gained a column in March is fine: earlier months simply have nothing in it. And a file that cannot be read is skipped with a warning instead of taking the whole table down, which matters because the folder is watched and a colleague leaving a workbook open in Excel should not break tomorrow's refresh.
The folder is watched as a whole, so a new file appearing is noticed, and so is one being deleted - neither of which a single file's timestamp could tell you. The preview says how many files match before you commit to reading them, and warns when the matched files have almost no columns in common, which usually means they are different tables that happen to share a folder.
Not to be confused with a watched folder. Load each file separately does the other thing: one table per file, with new files joining the list as they appear. Both are useful; they are different jobs.
Joins. A dataset can pull columns in from another - a lookup table of carrier names, say. Set it up in Model, and the joined columns appear on the dataset as if they had always been there.
Shared fields. Two datasets that mean the same thing by different column names (country and country_code) can be tied together as one concept in Model. A filter or a click on one then reaches the other.
SQL. The SQL tab runs a query across every loaded table and saves the result as a new dataset.
Tables sent over from a flow. If Data Flow is installed alongside this workspace, a flow's Write Data tool can register what it writes as a table here - it simply appears, with no file step in between. Running that flow again refreshes the table rather than adding a second one, and a dashboard you have open at the time updates on its own within a few seconds. That makes a flow the thing that keeps a dashboard current: run it when the new month's data lands, and everything built on it is up to date.
Connectors
A connector runs a query and lands the rows in the same place a file would. It is never a live query path: what you export always carries real rows, so the exported file works with no server and no credentials.
Passwords are never written to disk. A connection string may contain ${ENV_VAR} placeholders, resolved from the environment when the query runs, and a password you type is held in memory for that session only.
Connections are shared with Data Flow. When both workspaces are installed together they read one list, so a database you set up here is immediately usable as an Input tool on a flow canvas, and one set up there appears here. You can manage the list from either workspace, or from the Connections to databases and APIs section on the home page.
To connect: Home then Connect, choose the source, paste the connection string, write the query, press Preview, then Save as dataset.

Large files
Anything up to about half a gigabyte is read into the browser and everything happens there. Past that, the file is converted once into a Parquet store beside it and queried in place by DuckDB. The dataset card says which is happening.
What changes when a table is queried in place:
- Totals are still totals. Every number is computed over every row, or the card says what it was computed over. A sample never reaches a viewer without a badge saying so.
- Interaction stays quick because the app builds small pre-aggregated cubes for the page it is showing, and answers clicks from those.
- Some visuals need the rows themselves - anything that draws one mark per row, or works out a value row by row. Those say so on the card, and tell you what to do instead.
- A point cloud is sampled, and the badge says how many of how many points you are looking at.
- The detail grid pages through the rows rather than loading them all.
Building a page
Drag a visual from the palette, or double-click it. Click a card to select it; its settings appear on the right.
- Fields and measures. Most visuals want something to group by (a dimension) and something to measure. Pick a field from the dataset, or write your own measure.
- Moving and sizing. Drag by the title bar, resize from the bottom-right corner. Hold Ctrl or Shift to select several, then use the align buttons.
- Small multiples. Any chart can be split into a grid of small copies, one per value of a field.
- Analytics overlays. Trend lines, averages, forecasts, reference bands and error bars are settings on the visual, not separate visuals.
- Phone layout. Switch the canvas to Phone and drag the cards. Anything you do not move keeps following the desktop layout.
Formatting a visual
Select a visual and scroll its properties to Format. Anything you leave alone follows the dashboard theme, so changing the theme still restyles every card you have not formatted by hand. Each part has its own Reset, and Reset all puts the whole visual back to the theme.
- Card. Background colour and how see-through it is, the border (on or off, colour, width, solid, dashed, dotted or double, and which of the four sides it is drawn on), corner rounding, a drop shadow with its own colour, and padding. Transparent removes the card altogether.
- Header. A banner fill behind the title; the title's colour, size, weight, alignment, italic and font; the subtitle's colour, size and italic; and a divider line under the header.
- Colours inside. The ten data colours (start from a ready-made set such as Colour-blind safe, then click any swatch), the graded colour scale used by heatmaps and maps, the main, secondary and label text colours, the accent, inner lines and fills, the font, and grid lines. These work on every visual in the catalogue.
- Chart elements. Shown for visuals drawn as a chart: axis lines and labels, axis titles, grid line colour, style and width, the legend (show, hide, position, text), data labels, outlines around bars and slices, bar corner rounding, the chart background and the tooltip.
Colour boxes take the picker or any colour typed as text, such as #ff8800 or rgba(0,0,0,0.3).
Format painter
- Select the visual whose look you want to copy.
- Click Format painter on the toolbar (or the brush in the card's header). The canvas shows a bar saying what is being copied.
- Click another visual. Its format changes in one step you can undo.
Double-click the brush, or turn on Keep painting, to paste onto several visuals in a row. Whole page pastes onto every other visual on the page. Press Esc, click empty canvas or click Done to stop. With several visuals selected, Match format on the align bar gives them all the format of the last one clicked.
What is copied: the whole Format section, plus the visual's own look settings (such as show values, orientation or colour choices in its Style and Colour sections) where the other visual has the same setting. Fields, measures, filters, titles and text are never copied.
The canvas
Page settings live in the properties panel when no visual is selected.
- Width. By default the grid fills the window. Cap it at a fixed width and the page centres itself - which is what a dashboard authored on a laptop wants before it is opened on a wall screen.
- Row height. The height of one grid row in pixels. Everything on the page snaps to it, so this is the one control that makes a whole page taller or shorter without touching a single card.
- Background. A colour behind the cards, over the theme's own.
- Picture. A backdrop image - a floor plan, a map, a brand watermark. Choose how it fits (fill, fit inside, or tile) and how strong it is, so it sits behind the cards rather than fighting them. The picture is stored inside the dashboard, so it travels with an export; keep it under a few megabytes.
Saving
Save (Ctrl+S) writes the dashboard to its own file. The dot beside the name says there are changes that are not in it yet, and closing the dashboard or the browser with that dot showing asks you first.
Autosave is the switch beside Save. Turn it on and the dashboard's file is rewritten a couple of seconds after you stop making changes - never on a timer, so it does not write in the middle of dragging a card, and never when nothing has changed. It shows the time of the last write, so you can see it happening. A dashboard you have just made has no file yet: the switch reads off and says "on once you save", and clicking it saves once and starts. The switch is yours, not the dashboard's: it stays as you left it for every dashboard you open.
If a write ever fails - the file is read-only, or the drive it lives on has gone - autosave switches itself off, says why, and leaves your changes marked unsaved so you know to deal with it. It never keeps trying quietly, because that is how somebody comes to believe their work is safe when it is not.
Earlier versions, in the dashboard properties panel, lists what each save replaced and offers a way back to any of them. Restoring loads that version as an unsaved change, and saving it keeps a copy of the current one, so restoring is itself reversible. The saves you make by hand are kept forty deep. Autosave, which writes far too often to keep every version, keeps its own copy once a quarter of an hour, labelled Autosave in the list, and those are kept twenty deep - about five hours of continuous work. Neither set can push the other out.
Filters and interaction
Four things filter a dashboard, and they combine:
- Filter chips in the filter bar - dashboard-wide or page-only.
- Slicers on the canvas - the same thing as a chip, but a visual you can place and style.
- Cross-filtering - click a bar, a slice, a cell or a country and every other visual on the page narrows to it. Click again to clear.
- Drill-through - send a clicked value to another page that has been set up to accept it.
Associative filtering. A value list does not just hide what is excluded; it greys it out and tells you which selection shut it out. That is how you see that a carrier has no shipments in the month you picked, rather than wondering where it went.
Interactions. A visual can be told not to cross-filter a particular other visual. Select the source visual and use its interactions setting.
Bookmarks. Save the current combination of filters and selection under a name and return to it in one click.
Date filters
A date filter works two ways, and the popover has a row of tabs to switch between them.
Range is a stretch of time: the presets (last 30 days, year to date, last 12 months and so on), or two dates you type. Presets are relative to the newest date in the data, not to today, so a file that stopped updating still shows something sensible.
Month, Quarter and Year pick a part of the calendar instead. Tick March and you get every March the data holds - 2023, 2024 and 2025 together - which is what you want when the question is "how does March compare year on year". Tick several and they add up: March and April, or Q1 and Q4. The Year tab lists only the years the column actually contains.
A part filter and a range are separate modes, because they answer different questions. To combine them - March, but only 2024 and 2025 - add two filters on the same field: one in Month mode, one in Year mode. They apply together.
Both work identically over a file in the browser and over a table queried in place: the part is read out of the date here, or compiled to EXTRACT(month FROM ...) there.
Measures
A measure is a formula that produces one number for whatever group it is asked about. Sum([units]) is a measure; so is Sum([value_eur]) / Sum([units]).
Write them in the measure editor (the fx button beside a measure picker, or the dataset's Measures). A measure belongs either to the dataset - available to every dashboard over it - or to the one dashboard, which wins if the names clash.
Aggregate over the rows, not over the buckets. Sum([value]) / Sum([units]) is the value per unit over everything in the group. It is not the average of the per-row rates, and it is not the average of the monthly rates. That distinction is the whole reason measures exist rather than calculated columns.
Formats. Number, integer, currency, percent, or a custom pattern, with a fixed number of decimals. Set once on the measure and every visual follows.
| Aggregate | Takes | Notes |
|---|---|---|
Sum() | a number | Adds it up. |
Avg() | a number | The mean. Also Average or Mean. Merged from a sum and a count, so it is a true average over everything, not an average of averages. |
Min() | a number or date | The smallest. |
Max() | a number or date | The largest. |
Count() | a field | How many rows have a value in it. |
CountRows() | nothing | How many rows. Write it as CountRows(). |
CountDistinct() | a field | How many different values. Also CountD. Exact over rows and over a cube keyed by that field; estimated from a sketch in an export, where it is shown with a tilde. |
Median() | a number | The middle value. It cannot be merged from parts, so over a large table it is answered by the database, and an export estimates it from a histogram. |
Calculated fields are different: a formula evaluated per row, which becomes a column you can group by. Add them under the dataset's Calculated fields. Over a table queried in place they are computed by the database, so grouping by one is as quick as grouping by a real column.
Time intelligence
Any measure can carry a window under Over time in the measure editor:
| Mode | What it means |
|---|---|
| Year to date | From 1 January up to and including this bucket. |
| Quarter to date | From the start of this quarter. |
| Month to date | From the start of this month. |
| Rolling N | This bucket and the N-1 before it. |
| Previous period | The bucket before this one. |
| Same period last year | The matching bucket a year back. |
| Change on last year | This bucket minus the same one last year. |
| Change on last year, % | The same, as a percentage of last year. |
The value is re-aggregated over the window, never summed from the bucket values. A year-to-date rate is the rate for the year to date, not the sum of the monthly rates.
A window reads past the filter. Under a "July to December" filter, a year-to-date shown for December is still the whole year: the months the filter hides are read for the window and dropped again. The rows drawn are the rows the filter asked for; only the time-intelligent measures look behind it. That holds whether the table is in the browser, queried in place, or answered from a cube - the same rule, so the number does not change with where the data lives.
Two things it deliberately does not do. A rolling window counts the buckets that exist, so on a series with gaps a filtered rolling window is not the unfiltered one. And a filter that lists dates rather than bounding them - "these three days" - is not reached behind, because there is no bound to reach behind.
Formula language
Case-insensitive. Fields are written in square brackets, [order date]. Text is in double quotes.
IF [units] > 100 THEN "Bulk" ELSE "Standard" ENDIF
Left([sku], 3)
DateTimeMonth([shipped_on])
[value_eur] / NullIf([units], 0)
[carrier] IN ("DHL", "UPS")
- Operators:
+ - * / %,= != < <= > >=,AND OR NOT,IN,NOT IN. - Conditionals:
IF ... THEN ... ELSEIF ... THEN ... ELSE ... ENDIF, orIIF(test, a, b). - Null is a value. Arithmetic with null gives null;
IsNull()andCoalesce()handle it. - Comments:
//to the end of the line.
A formula that cannot be pushed down to a database says so on the card, naming the part that could not be compiled, rather than quietly showing a different number.

Visual catalogue
362 visuals in 17 groups, generated from the catalogue itself so this is always what the palette holds. 341 of them are photographs of the visual drawn against the sample data - what you would actually see on a page. The rest keep a drawing of the shape they take, because the sample has nothing to feed them: a map with no coordinates in it, an embed with nothing to embed, a card whose empty state is the honest answer. Press Showcase on any dataset card to see the whole catalogue drawn against your own numbers.

Sharing a dashboard
Single HTML file. Export writes one file containing the dashboard, the data it needs and the visuals it uses. It opens in any browser, offline, with no install. Filters, cross-filtering and drill still work, because the same engine ships inside it.
Over a large table the file carries cubes rather than rows: pre-aggregated totals that answer every visual on every page under every filter the page can apply. The export dialog shows the size before you commit, and any visual the cubes cannot serve says so in the file rather than showing a wrong number.
PDF and PowerPoint. Export each page as a slide or a page, for a pack that has to be printed or presented.
A visual on its own. Any card's header has an export button: a picture of that card, or its data as CSV.
Keyboard shortcuts
| Keys | What |
|---|---|
Ctrl + Z / Ctrl + Y | Undo / redo a design change |
Ctrl + S | Save now (with Autosave on, it is saved a moment after each change anyway) |
Delete | Remove the selected visual |
Ctrl + click | Add a visual to the selection |
Esc | Close a popover, dialog or full screen, or stop the format painter |
F | Focus the visual under the pointer |
Troubleshooting
A card says "Needs the rows in the browser". The table is queried in place and that visual works row by row. Either switch the dataset to a design sample, or use a visual that groups.
A number is shown with a ~ in front. It is an estimate from a summary carried in an exported file - a distinct count or a median that no cube can hold exactly. Open the dashboard in the app for the exact figure.
A card says "Needs the live data". An exported file was asked for something its cubes do not carry. Open it in the app.
A connector says a module is missing. Install the package it names (pip install connectorx, and so on) and press Retry.
A date column came in as text. Open the dataset's Column types and set it to Date; give the format if it is unusual.
A big file is still converting. The dataset card shows progress. You can design against the head of the file while it works.
The app will not start. Check that Python 3.12 or later is installed and that start.cmd is being run from the project folder.
